.KEY MESSAGES...

- Very cold air will continue through Monday morning. Highs will
  be in the single digits below to teens above zero, with lows of
  -5 to around -15. The coldest air will be over far northern and
  northeastern South Dakota into west central Minnesota.

- A Cold Weather Advisory for wind chills continues through this
  morning as feels-like temperatures fall to -25 to -35 degrees.

- Snow showers and flurries tonight into Sunday morning.
  Accumulations up to half an inch are possible.

- Temperatures return to near normal values Monday afternoon, with
  highs in the teens and 20s.

.SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY AFTERNOON/...

Surface high pressure will continue to slide southeast this morning.
As it does, winds will pick up marginally behind it, just enough to
make wind chills meet advisory criteria. Currently most obs are
hovering between -25 and -30 with slightly colder readings at the
RAWS sites. Expanded the Cold Advisory to the remainder of the
counties in central SD.

An upper trough digs in this afternoon with a lobe of shortwave
energy and some mid level moisture. Expect these features to
generate some light snow showers and flurries across the area this
evening through Sunday morning. Up to half an inch of snow is
possible. NBM, per usual, is washing out this light precip, but
ConsShort and ECAM both had reasonable pops and QPF so leaned that
way in the grids. A 1040s high then builds in Sunday afternoon
shutting off any ongoing flurries even with the potent shortwave
trough aloft.

Will let the day shift take another look at any necessary headlines
for tonight into Sunday morning. It`s possible that the northern
tier could hit -30 again, but clouds could be a mitigating factor.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY EVENING THROUGH FRIDAY/...

The long term opens Sunday night with an upper level trough making
its way north to south across SD.This is south and out of the region
by sunrise Monday. High pressure is in place at the surface during
this time that will move south. A warm front moves across the
surface during the day Monday bringing westerly winds and some WAA
to the forecast area. This will usher in some slightly warmer
temperatures, although still 10-15 degrees below average. The rest
of the work week features high pressure at the surface and dry
conditions with the exception of Wednesday when models show a slight
chance for some snow between the MO and James Rivers. Chances are
20% or less. As mentioned, temperatures during the period are
expected to still be below average. Highs are generally in the teens
to 20s, slightly higher in south central SD. Temperatures look to
start a warming trend into the weekend and beyond. Not much expected
in the way of winds during the period, although signal continues for
some higher wind gusts on the eastern side of the Prairie Coteau
Monday afternoon as the wind takes on a more southwesterly
direction.
