.KEY MESSAGES...

- A frontal passage tonight will result in a brief cooldown
across northern and central Utah through Friday.

- Near-record warmth redevelops this weekend into Monday.

- A shift in the pattern is expected next week, moving towards
cooler and wetter conditions Tuesday onward.

&&

.DISCUSSION...High-based shower activity ongoing across northern
Utah this evening will taper off through early Thursday morning as
the associated upper level disturbance exits the region. Cooler,
northerly flow developing mainly across northern Utah behind this
system will result in high temperatures trending 15-20 degrees
cooler than Wednesday`s highs both Thursday and Friday.
Temperatures across central and southern Utah will only moderate
slightly, with highs still running 15-20 degrees above normal.

Widespread near-record to record heat will hold one last stand
this weekend as the persistent upper- level ridging across the
western US re-amplifies. Slight chances for afternoon/evening
convection still exist for the southern mountains and southeast
Utah on Sunday as weak return flow nudges into the Four Corners
region. This meager moisture transport around the ridge is
expected to spread farther north on Monday afternoon, introducing
a 20-30% chance for convection along the high terrain as far north
as the central Wasatch. Given very dry lower-levels, gusty and
erratic outflow winds would be the main concern for any cells that
develop.

A more robust shift in the pattern is expected Tuesday onward, as
ensembles are now in better agreement on the persistent ridge
finally breaking down, with longwave troughing becoming the
dominant feature through at least Friday. While this pattern will
support a shift to cooler and wetter conditions across the
region, notable spread in the timing and amplitude of this trough
makes details a bit murky at this time.

.AVIATION...KSLC...High-based showers will continue to cross the
terminal through 07z tonight, with the most likely impacts being
slight lowering/thickening of VFR cloud deck, and potentially brief
periods of gusty erratic outflow winds. Otherwise, prevailing winds
are expected to remain light northerly before switching to light
southeasterly after showers move out of the area. Near sunrise
Thursday, a cold front will push through, helping to solidify
northwest winds again and leading to gradual clearing thereafter.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...A narrow band of high based
showers is expected to continue across northern Utah to southwest
Wyoming through around 08z tonight ahead of an approaching cold
front. The biggest impacts with these showers are gusty erratic
outflow winds and some slight lowering of VFR CIGS. Around sunrise
Thursday, the surface front will push through northern terminals,
reinforcing northwesterly flow behind it. Skies then gradually clear
through the day, with the front reaching southern terminals by late
afternoon.
